How they compare

The Airbus A321neo and Boeing 737 MAX 9 are the largest reengined single-aisles in regular service, but they are not equal competitors. The A321neo is a 44.5 m aircraft seating up to 244 and flying 4,000 nautical miles in its long-range version and 4,700 as the XLR; it is the best-selling variant of the A320neo family with several thousand on order. The 737 MAX 9 is 42.2 m long, seats up to 220, flies around 3,550 nautical miles and has sold in the low hundreds, because the airlines Boeing hoped would buy it mostly waited for the longer MAX 10 or defected to the A321neo. Boeing's real answer to the A321neo is the MAX 10, whose certification has run years late.

Both use geared or high-bypass current-generation engines and offer similar fuel burn per seat on routes they can both fly. The A321neo's advantages are capacity, range and the wider cabin; the MAX 9's are commonality with the rest of a 737 fleet and the lower weight of a smaller aircraft. The MAX 9 was grounded with the rest of the MAX family in 2019 and 2020 and again for three weeks in January 2024 after a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines aircraft, incidents that have shaped its reputation more than its performance has.

Passenger experience

The A320-family fuselage is about seven inches wider than the 737's, and on these long single-aisles that translates to roughly an 18-inch economy seat against 17, felt most in the middle seat of a six-hour flight. The A321neo's Airspace cabin has larger bins and a quieter sound signature; the MAX 9 has the Boeing Sky Interior with its own larger bins. Long-range A321neos flown transatlantic by JetBlue, Aer Lingus and TAP carry lie-flat business seats, which few MAX 9s have. Both are long tubes to board, so sit near a door if you have a tight connection. For the best seat, pick an exit row or a window ahead of the wing, and avoid the rearmost rows on either.

Which to choose

For most airlines the A321neo is the more capable aircraft, which the order books reflect. The MAX 9 makes sense where a 737 fleet already exists and 180 seats are enough. For passengers the A321neo is generally the more comfortable of the two, by the width of one seat.
