Wellington is famous among pilots and spotters for gusty crosswind landings. Strong winds funnel through Cook Strait, and the single short runway is bounded by water at both ends, so on a windy day arrivals can be dramatic to watch. The airport opened on its current site in 1959, across a narrow isthmus between Lyall Bay and Evans Bay, which is why the city wraps so closely around it.
